Llafur Online Event & AGM 2021 – Strikes, Lockouts and Collective Memories: Remembering 1921 and 1926
Online
Event Date: 27/11/2021
Llafur invites you to our latest online event and 2021 AGM.
Reflecting on his early life in Tredegar in In Place of Fear (1952), Aneurin Bevan summarised his experience of the lockout of 1926 as ‘like watching a film unfold that I had already seen made.’ Bevan’s interpretation points towards a perceived intrinsic connection between the despondency of the miners in 1926 and the catastrophic defeat of the lockout which preceded it in 1921. His depiction also hints at the construction of collective coalfield memory in the decades that followed the tumultuous 1920s. A century on from the lockout of 1921, please join us and our guest speaker David Selway to explore the relationship between 1921 and 1926, and uncover how individual recollections of both have been central in shaping and reshaping historical narratives of industrial struggle in the South Wales Coalfield.
