Since 1973, the South Wales Miners’ Library has preserved and championed the ‘Resources of Hope’ of mining communities from across South Wales. It has been supported in this half-century endeavour by Llafur: the Welsh People’s Society, once referred to as ‘the political wing of the Miners’ Library’ by Hywel Francis. To mark 50 years of this enduring connection, join us at the Waterfront Museum in Swansea on Saturday 21st October (10am-4pm) where we will discuss the past, present and future of Llafur and the South Wales Miners’ Library.

10.00 am – Welcome and introductions
10.15 – 11.45 am – South Wales Miners’ Library Panel – Richard Davies, Professor David Egan, Rob Humphreys, Sian Williams – Chaired by Rt Hon Mark Drakeford MS, First Minister of Wales (followed by discussion, Q&A)
11.45 am – 12.00 pm – Break
12.00 – 1.30pm – Llafur Panel – Professor Sir Deian Hopkin, Professor Angela V. John, Professor Dai Smith, Dr Stephanie Ward – Chaired by Dr Marian Gwyn (followed by discussion, Q&A)
1.30 – 2.30pm – Lunch
2.30 – 4.00 pm – Keynote “Labour in Power at Westminster” from Rt Hon Nick Thomas-Symonds MP – Chaired by Professor Sir Deian Hopkin (followed by discussion, Q&A)
From 5pm, join us for a social gathering and buffet meal at the nearby SWIGG to celebrate 50 years of Llafur and the South Wales Miners’ Library (additional charge for the meal of £18.50).
